Speaking with my children

about the first Thanksgiving, they admonished me about using the term “Indian”. This leads to an interesting question, which IS the proper term, to be correct, to refer to the indigenous peoples who lived in what would become America.

Is Native American correct? Or is it more proper to refer to the individual tribal names?
